As a Latina professional living in the USA and embracing the American culture as my own without ever forgetting my roots and legacy, “Where Dolphins Walk” make me treasure those worlds even deeper. Thanks to the author’s narrative and beautiful descriptive passages of Chile, Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina (just to cite a few) I found myself mentally revisiting some of those places that I’ve had the opportunity to visit some time ago. It’s not just the geography which we find intrinsically related to anthropology, but it’s also understanding that history, socio-economic and socio-ecologic factors play a significant role in the way cultures exist, evolve, transform and survive. What might be considered slow here might be a climate-related reason to be that way somewhere else. Or what you consider extremely important in America, might be intriguing to other cultures. There’s no such a thing as right and wrong. All are right, and all are wrong in one way or another. What matters is appreciating the richness, adopting the trades that fit you and your values might be a new way to integrate not only yourself but enriching the 3 cultures: the one in the North, Central and the one in the South. Allow yourself to take a guided tour for the five senses! Perhaps, just perhaps, you will rediscover new ways to live your life to the fullest.

Flying schedules and an immense amount of curiosity led Doug Keehn to compare his hectic, but efficient pace to the slower, more relaxed countries that he visits. The people he meets are courteous, kind and happy. In America, we have many possessions, but still continue to search for happiness. To say that money equals happiness is a huge contradiction. Other countries have proven this to be untrue. So, what is going on? Something has been happening in the United States in the last few years…we are split politically, we are more aggressive now and have less gratitude in our lives. Your book has finally said what many of us have been thinking for quite a while. We are spending more money, (some of it we don’t have, and are running up credit card debt), but find the enjoyment is only temporary. Character was once the measure of a person, but now we live in a frenzied state of mind with too much stuff surrounding us. Have we forgotten how to “play” and laugh? Maybe so. I love laughing, but if you laugh out too loud in a restaurant, some people will look at you as if you crossed over the boundary of what is allowed into a shameful action of disgrace. Great book Doug

Thought provoking! Eye opening! Heartfelt! Existential!
"Now boarding...A flight to: "Where Dolphins Walk"... The "flight" is, metaphorically, the words & sentences that the author (and commercial airline pilot), "navigates" in to a nice read / "ride" for the reader / "passenger". The "flight" touches on many different ideas / subjects / emotions; from describing how a relatively small event (involving two cars) can change one's perspective on life, to a deep appreciation of nature, to caring for those with little in monetary wealth (yet being "rich" in their passion for life)! In the end, I feel that the author's goal is, actually, to have the reader / "passenger" end up learning (or being reminded of) things which will help that person to end up "piloting" their own lives in a more satisfying and meaningful way! Enjoy your time with the Dolphins!

The author reached out to me through LinkedIn and I subsequently bought and read this book. It is truly inspirational and contains sage and thoughtful advice as to how to approach life and living. Having lived in Costa Rica, I recognized many aspects of what Doug writes about and regret not embracing more of the culture instead of being impatient and frustrated with it. We live an unconnected life where far too many people are only concerned with what you can do for them rather than who you are and “What’s in it for me?” Is so often the unspoken question. How sad is it to go to a restaurant and see a family at another table; all of them on their phones playing games or texting and not having conversations with the people who they are with and who will, one day not be there, perhaps leaving us with regrets as to all the things left unsaid? How sad is it that we live in a culture where it is considered to be weak if you have good manners, saying please and thank you, and treating everybody with respect, no matter they be rich or poor? Buy this book, read it, absorb it and you will get more value out of it than you think is possible. Thank you, Doug, for having the courage to write it.

To me, a Brazilian who has undergone the process of naturalization and happily embraced life in the USA for the last eighteen years, this book has special significance. In the same way as the author, I have been blessed with the opportunity of traveling extensively, and of seeing life unfold in many different countries before settling in the US. The way Mr. Keehn describes his impressions, experiences and thoughts, as he takes us along on his flights and layovers, is deeply touching in its sometimes childlike, and always very sincere, enchantment when relating first time experiences and encounters. Full of heartfelt honesty, self-examination, open mindedness and curiosity, the book truly lays out the stark contrast between lifestyles in different parts of the world. Never judgmental, never condescending, with lots of humor and warmth, he simply tells us his stories, and how they transformed his life. We are invited to draw our own conclusions, and are left a little sad when it’s over. He easily makes the countries he visits, the people and the very dolphins he encounters, come to life very vividly, taking us away from our own accustomed surroundings. I could personally relate to so much of what Mr. Keehn writes, to the point where I realized it was time for me to go pay a visit to my birth country again. Reading the book, I could hear the sounds of Rio, São Paulo and Florianópolis, taste the salt of the sea, feel the sand between my toes, miss the foods and sights, feel the breeze and smell the ocean.
I highly recommend taking this trip with the dolphins. It is an uplifting, gentle and yet daring, very positive look at life, and how we are, each of us, capable of always finding new horizons, both within ourselves as well as around us. With an open mind and an open heart, life’s challenges can always be met and conquered, no matter the circumstances!

Douglas Keehn has written an uplifting book, full of stories, all of them interwoven in a fantastic, almost magical way. I read this book in only 4 days, it got my full attention since the first page.
The stories that describe Douglas' experiences will take you to South America. You’ll listen, taste, smell, see the multiples colors, melodies and flavors of a continent constantly framed as full of problems and challenges. I loved this book! I read it in one day! I could feel the depth of Mr Keehns experiences as he shares his inspired insights on life. Mr Keehn yearned for something that led him to a simpler, softer, slower more loving life. By following his higher self/ intuition/ gut feeling he walked a path of spirt that led him to a profound journey of his truths and a life of inner peace and deep joy. In his book the author had many beautiful encounters with different people that were part of his guidance that clearly led him to his enlightened path. This book teaches us about having awareness and listening to those draws and forces and taking action. It is a great reminder to cultivate greater peace, gratitude, and embrace a life of kindness, and serenity in our own life. Thank you Doug for reminding us that we are all spiritual beings having a human experience, and we should never judge, but honor each other’s journey I highly recommend this book!

This was an fascinating example of literary work. Not only is this book a wonderful read. It will challenge you to take some time out and look inside yourself and examine your own personal consciousness to other people and the way that they embrace and live life. This book will encourage you to slow down and really take the time to enjoy every moment in your life by causing you to examine what is truly important and what you think is important. The authors characterization of all the different people in all the different places will show the reader that being happy is truly and simply up to us individually. Imagine what the world would be like if we all slowed down just a little and considered all the little things that made us happy. If we did that, I believe that we would find that we all have more than we thought.

The author gives an excellent message, we should incorporate some of the less hurried ways of Latin culture into our often hectic American way of life. Where Dolphins Walk could easily be called a travelogue, or a memoir (as indeed the title suggests!), or even a philosophical treatise. It’s all of those, and none; it defies easy categorization. The author, in his career as a commercial airline pilot, traveled extensively over the course of a decade through much of Latin America. But this isn’t a story of the joys or challenges of a pilot flying from the northern hemisphere to the southern. It’s a joyful and, frankly, inspiring exploration of culture and family. Growing up in New York City, the author was part of a world of Mom and Pop cafés and corner stores. He vividly describes encountering these same types of establishments in his travels, and the men and women, boys and girls who made them their homes. It is these people who are the soul of Where Dolphins Walk. Some were akin to ships passing in the night, others became lifelong friends over the course of years. All are expertly woven into an exploration of a different, calmer way of life. That journey is immeasurably enriched by the vivid descriptions of both people and places. Through the author’s words, I was able to visualize the streets, restaurants, beaches, friends and acquaintances that became part of his life. What will you take away after reading this book? Where does anyone begin when opening up a new book to read. From the minute I pick up the book Where Dolphins Walk, I could relate to it. Is is easy to read and brought me back to some of the places that I have also visited through the years. The lessons that we are learning everyday help us to better understand people through out the world in their thinking and in their everyday life. Our doors to learning have to be open all the time because everyday is a new beginning when one door closes another one opens. We as people are all the same no matter what color we are. We may look different to others but are thinking is similar. In America we do go to fast and in other countries they go much slower and appreciate what life has to offer. We don’t need to be rich or poor. We need to face each day as a new journey filled with love and kindness not hatred. Doug will always keep my mind open to what is out there. I truly enjoyed his book and recommend it to others.

This book made a difference in my life. It was well written, interesting, funny at times, but mostly thought provoking. This book finds an International Airline Pilot in the “right” seat of a Boeing 777. He explores how to live a “right” life to find tranquility and happiness. The book is part introspective, part informative, part tour guide and sometimes funny. The author asks, “what is it about the “right”way Dolphins live that we as humans can mimic?” He experiences this more frequently in South America. Hollywood, take notice! This insightful book would make a great movie.

The author is not only an airline pilot but a great storyteller. I felt like I was with him on his journeys and experienced some of the details and adventures along with him. The book reminds you of the human experiences that flying enables in the remarkably interconnected, amazing world we live in. A fun and entertaining read. Written with great emotion and eloquence.

Easy, pleasant read. Mini travelogue of South America. Keehn has a narrative style that keeps the reader interested and wondering what comes next. His self discovery was easy to relate to. Insights into the life of a plane crew off the job was sometimes intriguing. Personally, I felt connected because he spent some of his younger years in the same South Florida region that I live in.

Can't believe that this is the author's first book, very well written. Douglas Keehn has written a beautiful book about his extensive travels and the personal growth that is possible when one carries an open mind and heart to far away places. The book also shares insights into the world of airline personnel and the fascinating contrast of "living" at home and abroad. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story and reliving some of my own travels to many of the same destinations.

I enjoyed this book immensely. The symbolism between the walking dolphins and the friends that Mr. Keehn meets along the way during his travels to South America is beautifully done. There are a lot of lessons here that the rushed and chaotic lives we live can learn from. My favorite line from the whole book is: "Being slow is not the same as being lazy." I often wish that I could slow my life down and enjoy a nice cup of coffee in a small cafe where I could people watch as long as I wanted. I recommend this book to anyone. There is so much to learn and appreciate about our neighbors to the south.
